In the heart of Bihar, within the Gopalganj district’s Majha Emilia village, a story of inspiration, perseverance, and entrepreneurial spirit unfolds. At its center is Ram Sagar Yadav, a former bank manager, now a successful businessman. A single broadcast from PM Narendra Modi steered Yadav’s life towards a unique and noble path.
The Turning Point:
Ram Sagar Yadav, once comfortably ensconced as a bank manager, had his epiphany while listening to PM Narendra Modi’s inaugural ‘Mann Ki Baat’. In that address, the PM’s mention of the Khadi industry struck a chord with Yadav. It wasn’t just a fabric but a symbol of India’s rich heritage.
Journey Towards Khadi:
Drawn by the PM’s words, Yadav’s determination solidified upon visiting an ashram in Champaran. Witnessing the intricate processes of Khadi production, he realized the potential of this age-old craft. Although he began his foray into Khadi alongside his job, by 2019 he was fully immersed.
From Banking to Business:
Leaving his managerial position at SBI Life Insurance, Yadav embarked on his entrepreneurial journey, founding ‘Kushgram Khadi Village Industries Institute’. His venture now stands as a testament to his vision, employing 70 villagers, predominantly women.
The Craft of Khadi:
Under Yadav’s guidance, the factory undertakes an end-to-end process: from spinning cotton threads to weaving them using traditional handlooms. Innovating with dyes and prints, the establishment produces contemporary Khadi garments, including fashionable sarees for women.
Broadening Horizons:
Beyond traditional attire, Yadav’s factory produces kurta-pajama, shirt-pant fabrics, and the ever-popular Khadi sadri (jacket). Interestingly, the demand for this jacket is higher in Uttar Pradesh than in Bihar, with the factory sometimes struggling to meet the overwhelming demand.
Reliance’s Endorsement:
A significant achievement for Yadav’s enterprise came when the Reliance Company chose to collaborate with them. After rigorous inspections and quality checks, Reliance placed its orders, making Yadav’s establishment the only factory in Bihar to secure such a partnership.
Diversifying the Portfolio:
Alongside textiles, Yadav ventured into everyday organic products. From spices like turmeric, cumin, and black pepper to unique offerings like papaya seed bath soap, Yadav’s approach remains consistent: minimal and safe chemical usage to ensure consumer safety.
Employment and Vision:
Having already created job opportunities for 70 individuals, a majority of them women, Yadav’s ambition doesn’t stop here. He dreams of empowering one lakh women and envisions a future where Khadi graces every household and individual.
Ram Sagar Yadav’s story isn’t just about business; it’s a testament to the power of inspiration and the impact of recognizing potential in age-old traditions. Through his journey, Khadi isn’t just a fabric; it’s a movement towards sustainable employment and cultural resurgence.
