Free LPG Cylinder: Residents of Uttar Pradesh have a new reason to celebrate this Diwali. The UP government has announced the initiation of its plan to provide two free LPG cylinders to its citizens. This initiative was previously promised in the electoral manifesto, specifically targeting women. The commencement of this scheme is set to coincide with the Diwali festival of 2023.

Key Guidelines Established

In a recent meeting, the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh issued necessary instructions related to this scheme. Discussions with departmental officials were focused on ensuring a swift rollout of the initiative.

Distribution During Festivals

Under the Ujjwala Yojana, beneficiaries will receive one free cylinder during Diwali, with the possibility of the second one being distributed during Holi. The Yogi government has completed all preparations in this regard.

Funds Transfer Via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)

Approximately 1.75 crore gas connections have been provided in Uttar Pradesh under the Ujjwala Yojana. For the first time during Diwali, the cost of the gas cylinder will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts using the Direct Benefit Transfer method.

Decisions Made Under Chief Secretary’s Leadership

The decision to roll out this initiative was finalized in a meeting in Lucknow, presided over by the Chief Secretary. The proposal from the Food and Supply Department will soon receive cabinet approval, ensuring its implementation before Diwali.

Budget Allocation

During the previous legislative assembly elections, the BJP had committed in its ‘Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra’ to provide free gas cylinders to women on Holi and Diwali. To implement this scheme, a budget provision of Rs. 3301.74 crores has been allocated.
