Humble Beginnings
Nestled in a small village of Washim district, Vaibhav Sonone’s family lived a simple life, with both his parents working as laborers. Financial hardships were a daily challenge, but the family’s spirit remained unbroken.
Firsts in the Family
Defying all odds, Vaibhav became the first in his family to not only attend college but also to win prestigious accolades. This year, he bagged both the Chevening Scholarship and the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships sponsored by the UK Government. Choosing the latter, Vaibhav is now set to pursue an MSc in Environment and Development from the renowned University of Leeds.
Education as a Beacon of Hope
Vaibhav always believed in the transformative power of education. His academic journey began at a local government primary school. As years passed, his commitment grew stronger, even if it meant walking 6 kilometers and crossing a river daily to attend another government school.
Topping Charts & Pursuing Passions
His dedication bore fruit when he enrolled in Shri Sakharam Maharaj Vidyalaya, continuing his education and emerging as the top student. His academic quest led him to Fergusson College, Pune, where he pursued a BA in Political Science.
Sacrifices & Support
Moving to Pune was no minor feat for Vaibhav. With just two thousand rupees borrowed for the journey, he initially found refuge at his aunt’s house. Transitioning to a college hostel required funds, prompting his mother to part with her cherished jewelry. Alongside this familial sacrifice, Vaibhav found allies in some of his college professors who stepped in to financially assist him.
Undeterred Ambition
Money was tight, but Vaibhav’s spirit never wavered. He pursued an MA in Development at Azim Premji University after graduation. Today, as he readies himself to study abroad, his story stands as a testament to what resilience and determination can achieve, even in the face of adversity.
