Fantasy Premier League has seen a significant surge in the acquisition of Belgian player Kevin De Bruyne ahead of Gameweek 22. More than 1.7 million managers have included him in their team as he readies himself for the home match against Burnley. This is the highest number of transfers for a player this season and the third-highest Gameweek total on record. Encouragingly for De Bruyne’s new owners, both Cristiano Ronaldo and Son Heung-min produced 13-point returns when they were bought en masse. Ronaldo scored twice at home against Newcastle United in Gameweek 4 of the 2021/22 season, while Son registered a goal and an assist in Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with West Ham United in Gameweek 5 of 2020/21.
What is noteworthy is that of the 10.1 million transfers made ahead of the Gameweek 22 deadline, a remarkable 16.9% were used to recruit De Bruyne, far exceeding the percentages for both Ronaldo and Son. Indeed, no player has received a greater share of transfers since records were kept.
Additionally, Diogo Jota and Erling Haaland are in the top three recruits for the upcoming Gameweek. Jota has been the second most-bought player following his 19-point haul, while Haaland, who will return to the Manchester City squad, is anticipated to play against Burnley. Three Manchester City players, including Julian Alvarez, feature among the top five captains.
As the FPL championship race heats up, differentials will play a crucial role, with leading 100 managers splitting their captaincy choices among 17 different players. The most popular picks are De Bruyne and Phil Foden, who have each been backed by 24 members of this elite group. With the addition of Fabian Schar’s stellar performance and the playing of the Triple Captain chip by many managers, Gameweek 22 has generated significant excitement and anticipation.
