The U.S. Department of Justice is conducting an investigation into the spending of campaign funds by Missouri Democratic Rep. Cori Bush, as per a statement released by the congresswoman on Tuesday. Bush stated that she has faced constant threats to her safety and life since even before taking office, and as a result, has used campaign funds to pay for security services as she is not entitled to personal protection by the House. She clarified that no federal tax dollars have been utilized for personal security services and any reports suggesting otherwise are false.

The Justice Department declined to comment on the investigation. The news of the probe surfaced after the U.S. House Clerk announced that the Justice Department had served the Sergeant at Arms with a grand jury subpoena for documents, without disclosing the nature of the documents or the name of the member of Congress associated with the investigation. The probe is reported to be related to how Bush used her Member Representation Allowance, which is used by members of Congress to cover office expenses and is funded by taxpayer dollars.

Bush, who represents Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, stated that she is fully cooperating with the Justice Department’s investigation, as well as with the Federal Election Commission and the U.S. House Committee on Ethics, both of which are reviewing the matter. She attributed the allegations to right-wing organizations and dismissed them as frivolous and intended to distract her from her work in Congress.

Specifically, the allegations are related to her husband’s involvement in her campaign and the security services provided by him. Bush defended the hiring of her husband for security services, stating that he has extensive experience in the field and was retained at or below a fair market rate in accordance with all applicable rules. Despite the allegations, Bush remains focused on her work in Congress and stated that she will continue to lead boldly, legislate change, and save lives for the people of St. Louis.
