The Pride of Awari:

Hailing from Madhaura’s Awari village, Somesh wasn’t just another name. By securing the 34th position in the esteemed UPSC examination, he became a beacon of hope and inspiration for his entire village and the state of Bihar.

A Sudden Void:

Life can be unpredictably cruel. As Somesh was navigating the challenging path to his dreams, tragedy struck. His father, Upendra Upadhyay, an employee in a Kolkata-based private company, breathed his last on 31st May 2015.

A Journey of Determination:

Somesh’s academic journey was both diverse and illustrious. He completed his 10th from the Bengal Board, followed by his 12th in Science from Deoghar. He then pursued a B.Sc from the prestigious St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata. Further honing his academic credentials, Somesh undertook an MSc from the Tata Research Institute. It was in 2014, armed with a rich educational background, that he began preparing for the UPSC exams.

Bearing the Mantle of Responsibility:

With his father’s untimely departure, the weight of familial responsibilities pressed heavily on Somesh’s shoulders. The role of the family’s protector and provider was thrust upon him at a juncture when he was focusing on his UPSC preparations.

The Pillar of Support:

Family extends beyond immediate relations, as was evident in Somesh’s life. Uncle Vinod Upadhyay stood by him like a rock in turbulent times, offering both emotional and practical support. Somesh frequently recounts how his uncle’s encouragement became the wind beneath his wings.

Sustaining the Family:

Demonstrating grit and tenacity, Somesh found ways to keep the home fires burning. Along with his UPSC preparations, he gave tuitions, ensuring the well-being and education of his two younger sisters.

A Bittersweet Coincidence:

Fate has its way of scripting stories. On the very day – 31st May – when Somesh faced the immense loss of his father, he also received the news of his selection in the UPSC. Reflecting on this twist of fate, Somesh voiced a heartfelt sentiment: his father would have swelled with pride at this achievement, for it was his dream to see Somesh adorn the IAS mantle.
