India has achieved another milestone in the field of technology with the opening of its first 3D printed post office. Located in the Cambridge Layout area of Bengaluru, this post office was inaugurated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The construction of this post office was completed in just 43 days as opposed to the originally planned 45 days.
The construction of the post office involved the use of a machine that utilizes 3D concrete printing technology. A specialized robotic printer was used to deposit layers of concrete according to the fed design. The use of a specific type of concrete ensured the strength and durability of the structure by ensuring a seamless connection between layers. The total cost of building this post office amounted to approximately 23 lakh rupees, which is around 30-40% lower compared to traditional construction methods.
The 3D printing technology used in the construction of this post office was supported by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Professor Manu Santhamam from IIT Madras assisted in the technical aspects of the 3D printing. The unique feature of this building is its absence of vertical joints or columns, thanks to the flexibility provided by the 3D printing technique.
The import of 3D printing technology from Denmark allowed for the incorporation of intricate designs in the building easily. This 3D printed post office stands as a testament to the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and showcases the country’s progress in embracing advanced technology.
