According to a recent report, scammers are now asking people to install screen-sharing apps on their phones or laptops and within minutes, emptying their bank accounts. One such scam, known as the phonepe app scam, happened with a businessman. After seeking help to operate his PhonePe account, the businessman was duped into downloading a screen-sharing app, resulting in a loss of over 50,000 rupees.
As per the report, the businessman, who resided in a village in Karnataka, was facing issues with his PhonePe app. He started searching for a solution on Google, and during the process, he came across a number – 08918924399. He called the number on July 9. The call was disconnected the first time, but the person on the other end called back from a different number – 01725644238.
The fraudster asked the businessman about his trouble with the PhonePe app and inquired about his two bank accounts. After providing the details, the businessman was asked to install the RAS desk, a screen-sharing app. Falling for the scam, the businessman installed the app. The fraudster, monitoring his actions, asked him to open the PhonePe app and scanned the front and back parts of his two credit cards. Subsequently, 29,998 rupees were deducted from the Bank of Baroda credit card and 27,803 rupees were deducted from the Axis Bank credit card.
To avoid falling victim to such scams, it is essential not to trust strangers. Contact the company’s official email or contact number to seek help. Remember, company officials never ask you to download any apps or share your screen with them.
